Choices

No one word describes this place. Minutes of peace
can be shattered by screams, groans or sobs.
Good food can be followed by freezer burned fish.
Seeing only the good or bad requires
using energy to ignore part of what exists. To live
without useless internal or external grumbling
is to win time and energy.
Each moment contains its mixture.
Do I prefer to concentrate on my aching side or
the bird singing on a branch near my window?
Do I prefer to feed the anger caused by a bell,
turned off and then ignored for twenty minutes
or my husband’s loving voice coming from
the fallen phone I retrieved painfully myself?
My choice.
